ATHENS CHAPTER OF OHC

NEWSLETTER

JANUARY 2010

Note from Secretary

Welcome to the New Year. Even though it’s not very pleasant out right now, or look much like riding weather, we’re definitely looking forward to a fun-filled 2010. Our 2010 promises to bring us fun and excitement, and our new officers are enthusiastic to help generate as much of both as possible. The new crew had a dinner meeting the other night, basically to familiarize Pres. Peggy with the new job, as she really wasn’t sure what she’d gotten herself into, other than accidentally setting her eye on fire with some inadvertently placed bean dip.

We all seem to be in agreement that trail riding and camaraderie, (and food,) are our priorities, getting out to ride and meet with old, and new, friends along the way. Discussion of moneymakers, rides during week, speakers were mentioned. There seemed to be some confusion as to when and how the ‘ 10 officers were to take over, and we’ll be addressing some items at the meeting on the 16th, such as looking at the committees the out-going officers installed and some other internal concerns.

We’ll be looking forward to seeing lots of you at the meeting, and on the trail. Hopefully this will turn out to be a fun year for us all.

Happy trails, Marvin

January 2010 Info

Well, here we are again. Our schedule puts us ready for another meeting on Feb. 6th, at the home of Marilyn Wentworth, at 3:00pm. This will be a potluck, (oh boy,oh boy,) and as usual we’ll be voting on our favorite dish, so you may want to break out that recipe you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

Our Jan. meeting was well-attended, with about 25 members having dinner and fun. The committee slate was streamlined down to 8 committees for the year. The trail schedule, Peggy S., Bonnie Lackey, Diane Potter, is being worked on, with lots of suggestions made for places we’d like to ride, and it should be a fun season of riding. They will be planning rides not only on the weekends but also during the week. Among other topics discussed was the possibility of doing a couple “money makers,” one being a Hunter Pace and also a “Police Training” course, if we can find a suitable location and time.

A tip of the hat for a job well done goes to our new president, Peggy Sisson. Peggy was a little nervous since this was a new experience for her, but there was no need to worry, as she did a fine job of conducting her first meeting.

Our guest speaker was Pam Jeffers who explained about her “Natural Freedom” equine learning and therapy business, which gets one to look at interpersonal relationships by observing and learning form the dynamics of the horse and herd. Pam was also the winner in our split-the-pot drawing, so she had a very profitable evening all around. Look for an article on Pam and Robert in the Feb. issue of Guideposts magazine.

Message from our would be Feb. Hostess

Hi everybody,

I’m so sorry that the weather got in the way of our “ride and eat” club.  We’ll reschedule for another time soon.  The horses and alpacas think the snow is a wonderful addition to their already fuzzy fur.  Curious about the alpacas?  Contact me to arrange a visit anytime.  Choco and Phoenix love to show off for guests!

Do any of you need wonderful alpaca gifts for Valentines’ Day?  If so, I have amazing socks for $18, wacky sock monkeys (they have crazy yarn hair and a heart sewn on for Valentine’s Day!) for $37, soft as butter scarves for $60, and fancy Suri Teddy Bears for $60. I’ll deliver if necessary since we cancelled the meeting at my house and I’ve included directions to my house if you want to come here to shop.  Please look at the attachment for pictures and descriptions.

Hope to see you soon…

Movie of the Month

Wrangler

This is an older, 1989; movie but is a nicely done for its time. The actors, action and Austrian scenery are fun. The movie had a nice story line and actually even though a romance (remember this is Valentine’s month) wasn’t gushy. You can find it at the Athens County Library.

Please pass along – these horses need any help that can be spared.

Article in Paper:

An Ohio woman faces multiple animal cruelty charges after county animal welfare authorities removed 31 allegedly malnourished Arabian horses from her property. Last week animal welfare authorities from the Humane Society of Ottawa County discovered 37 animals allegedly living in filth without food or water. One horse was found dead and five were euthanized at the scene. The remaining 31 horses were moved to the Sandusky County Fairgrounds stables, where another was later euthanized. The surviving animals are receiving rehabilitative care.    On Monday farm operator Robin E. Vess was charged with 42 counts of second-degree misdemeanor animal cruelty. Humane Society Prosecutor Chris Marcinko said the charges pertain to 42 animals discovered alive and deceased on the property. Each count carries penalties of up to 90 days in jail and fines up to $750.

Dr. Pete Smith, Legendary Vet and Friend

Though it is a beautiful, sunny morning here in Southeast Ohio, our world has lost some of its’ luster. Our dear friend and beloved veterinarian Pete Smith has passed away, succumbing to injuries he received in a logging accident in his manicured woods.

To attempt a description of Pete’s influence on the thousands of lives he touched, would be a monumental task. Whether socially or as a vet, the vitality and energy he exuded was contagious. One could always feel the love for life this man exhibited. We trusted our dearest animal friends to Pete’s expertise and received treatment to ourselves at the same time.

Having known him for almost 30 years, we had settled into the habit of always pulling the other aside, whether on dire or happy occasions, to tell the latest jokes. His smile and laugh were infectious and the sparkle in his eyes would light the room. The gifts he gave to all of us are present in the healthy critters we love, and in the friendships we hold dear. None who met him will ever forget him.

Though the void his passing creates is large, the outlook on life he let us is larger. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to all his friends. He will be forever missed and never forgotten.

There has been a Facebook page created, In Support of Dr. Pete Smith, Legendary Vet and Friend, for those wishing to share their stories about Pete.
